Red Hill Park Cleanup
LF, Etiwanda, D15N
On October 1, 2022 we held an interclub Park Clean Up and PTP Fundraiser with Alta Loma High School! We did the clean up at Red Hill Community Park and we also sold water balloons after the cleanup to raise money for PTP. Overall, we had a great turnout, having over 50 Etiwanda members and raising over $75 for PTP! The event began at 3:00 PM and ended at 4:30 PM, dedicating the last 30 minutes to our fundraiser, and at the beginning of the cleanup we had a hard time finding trash, but by the end we collected fifteen full bags of trash! We also cleaned up the extra scraps of the water balloons after the fundraiser to ensure we left the park better than when we arrived. It was a very nice day at the park, with clear skies and warm temperatures, and many new members attended as well as returning members. Overall, it was a very fun event and our members thoroughly enjoyed themselves!
Operation Smile
NR, John A. Rowland, D35E
In early October, Rowland Key Club held a service event surrounding the nonprofit, Operation Smile. This organization helps people who don’t have access to safe cleft surgery. We created sock puppets, a tool that speech pathologists use to help teach children about their cleft and how to form new sounds post-surgery. "These events not only informed me of the issues that was going on in the world, but also created a way to bring people together and acknowledge the capability that everyone could do something to help while having lots of fun,” Doris Tseng, one of our members, said “As a new member to Key Club, everyone was nice and I felt super welcomed. That allowed me to fully enjoy making these sock puppets.” All in all, this was a super fun event that allowed members to bond and contribute to their community together!
Night Market DCM
VD, Lakewood High School, D13N
On September 24, Lakewood Keyclub attended night market DCM! Before heading to the event our board woke up bright and early to prepare for our own stall where we sold our famous SPAM BRÛLÉE, which sold out! Once we got to the Kiwanis hall, we helped prepare the event by putting up the canopies and the tables so the clubs would be able to set up their booths! The night market was such a success! So many people attended and there was just a lovely environment, especially with the talent show going on in the background. Overall, it was such an amazing experience!
RTC Spirit Session
RS, Gahr High School, D13N
Division 13 North’s first RTC Spirit Session was held on Saturday, October 8th at Bellflower Kiwanis Hall from 4 to 7 pm. Compared to last year, I was quite surprised to see an abundance of new faces who were set on building spirit and getting a taste of what key club has in store for them. Today’s theme was 13 North’s Biggest Fan- meaning dress as your favorite celebrity- and the outfits that caught my eye the most were dressed as Taylor Swift and Soulja Boy! We began with an introduction from our LTG Kai Noah Jugo and spirit team then proceeded with the icebreaker, Poncho which was filled with dances and shouts back and forth between four groups until we eventually narrowed down to two (this round lasted 2 minutes long!). Led by Mary Carmona and Jaleena Nauta, Jensen Lauti and Anna Tamayo, Justin Arizmendi and Katie De Guzman, and John Paul Talag and Tate Noble, members were then split into groups and learned the essential “How do you feel?!” cheer in addition to a portion of our first main cheer! As division tech editor, I enjoyed going around groups to hyping them up and they definitely did not disappoint! At the end, everything came together very well with a mini spirit battle (it’s not a spirit session without one) and we definitely filled the parking lot of Kiwanis Hall with GREEN MONKEY SPIRIT. Thanks to the help of our spirit team, spirit coordinators, and DLT, today was a success and I look forward to the next session!
September (Shrek-Tember) DCM
K, Lincoln High, D13W
On a sunny Sunday afternoon at Grand Park, Division 13 West hedgehogs joined together for their first in-person DCM and spirit session of the school year! On September 24, 2022, the hedgehogs got a chance to meet and make friends from other neighboring schools in our Division. The day started off with members checking in with our lovely LTG, Janelle! Members got a chance to hang out with friends, and play football and volleyball! Once everyone checked in, the DCM portion began. The members got a chance to meet the DLT and hear about upcoming events. After the DCM, the chanting began! The hedgehogs learned upcoming chants for RTC and got a chance to spirit battle against each other! Overall, we had over 120 attendees and saw so many new faces!
