Okinawan Festival
YH, Kalani High School, D22H
Kalani Key Club went to the Hawaii Convention Center to help at the Okinawan Festival. The festival celebrates all things Okinawan and brings together Okinawans. Members worked in game booths where children could play and receive prizes. Also, there was a stamp sheet that you could receive stamps from game booths after playing. Even if you did not win the prize, you could still receive stamps. After receiving ten stamps, you could trade the stamp sheet for prizes at the prize booth. Games included soda ring toss, yo-yo Tsuri, bean bag toss, ball drop, Plinko, and Let’s go Fishing.
Many children were at the festival, so members were busy running the game booths. They hardly had any time for breaks. The shift started at noon and ended around 3:45 pm to 4 pm. Thanks to the members' hard work, the children had a good time. Some parents played games with their children. It was a pleasant scene watching parents enjoy the moment with their children after winning. Members worked with volunteers from other schools, such as Punahou, so it was a good opportunity for them to interact with participants from other schools. Kalani Key Club hopes to volunteer in this wonderful festival again so that more people, including teenagers and adults, can have a relaxing and fun day at the Convention Center.
Run 4 the Miracle
FA, D05S
On September 24th from 6:00 am- 9:30 am Division 05 South and Division 05 North came together to help present in the Run 4 the Miracle, a fundraiser that the local Kiwanis do to raise money for Valley children's hospital. This was a great event and I got to see my friends that I made previously at OTC there. They provided us with plenty of water and a delicious breakfast. Each group was stationed around the course and directed runners to the finished lines. There were so many different groups of runners, some schools, work peers, professional runners, and even grandparents supporting the family. It was such a cute turnout and each member had the opportunity to earn 3.5 service hours.
Clovis Botanical Garden
EM, BHS, D05N
The volunteering at the Clovis Botanical Garden was a success! We helped the Clovis Botanical Garden members with their daily maintenance of the Garden. This included cutting off dead branches, trimming bushes, taking out oak tree seeds, and pulling out the dead parts of plants. We got to take a tour of the place as well, they showed us all their exhibits and all the special species of plants they have! It was around two to three hours worth of service hours so it was a great way for some of our members to get some volunteering hours. It is so great volunteering at the Clovis Botanical Garden as we are not just helping the community but the environment! We are looking forward to the next event we hold at the Clovis Botanical Garden.
Region Training Conference
JE, University Preparatory, D38E
The Pixar themed RTC at Little Rock high school was an incredible event where we learned more about Key Club, got the opportunity to meet our Region 5 Lieutenant governors, and saw all kinds of costumes for the Pixar Costume Contest. My favorite part of the presentation given was learning about K-Kids and the Builders club as a way to get children involved in their communities too! We began the workshop with introductions and sharing our favorite Pixar movie. During our service project, we each wrote story books for children and decorated them in different colors. This event was an overall great learning experience in which we obtained so much more information regarding, not only our division, but Key Club as a whole.
Region 13 Night Market
AP, Temple City, D10N
As all Region 13 divisions bonded over food and fun at the Region 13 Night Market, they shared new experiences through the memorable night. Taking place in Big League Dreams, West Covina, each of the eight divisions sold their own treats and food items. Ranging from spam musubis to churros, all divisions sold food, drinks, and more such as spirit packs and stickers, respectively to their own division. From 4-8 pm on September 17, Key Clubbers laughed and met others from other divisions. The event was hosted and planned out by LTG Henrina from Division 35 West Seals, and LTG Gerard from Division 15 North Giraffes.
We began the night market by helping to set up our own division’s booths and from four to five p.m, we held ice breakers through interacting with everyone attending the night market. After ice breakers, the official night market began as Key Clubbers gathered and formed lines to buy each divisions’ special treat(s). We played games, took many photos, met new people and caught up with old friends. To end off the night, Key Clubbers gathered with their respective division and went over spirit chants as they prepped for Fall Rally. We hope you all had an amazing time, Lionfish!
