Wellness Center Fundraiser
JH, Pacifica, D42W
On November 1, 2022, Pacifica was a part of our Wellness Center’s Dia De Los Muertos celebration! Our Wellness Center is better referred to as “The Cove” and they are notorious in focusing on the mental health and wellbeing of our student body. They often host events such as lunch pop-ups, movie nights, and raffles to keep students engaged and relaxed during school hours. In honor of Dia De Los Muertos, we were allowed to reserve a booth at their movie night in order to fundraise for Fall Rally expenses and reimburse the chaperones. We sold two items throughout the night: hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and fried rice bought from Pho Saigon in Port Hueneme. Our fundraiser was pretty successful as we were able to raise over 150 dollars!
YMCA Turkey Trot
Burbank, D16S
On Thursday, November 24, Burbank High Key Club volunteered at YMCA’s annual Turkey Trot! The volunteers handed out water bottles, orange slices, and bananas, and encouraged runners who passed by. This year was the YMCA’s thirteenth annual turkey trot and we were so excited to come out and volunteer! The money raised from this event goes towards Burbank YMCA and financial assistance programs for low-income families to attend future YMCA events! Helping out at this year's Turkey Trot was a fun way to start the Thanksgiving holiday and we hope to be able to volunteer here again next year.
Cards for St. Joseph's Hospital
John Burroughs, D16S
JBHS White Tigers are geared for the festive holiday season and have continued service for the community. For Thanksgiving, Burroughs Key Club decided to express gratitude to the emergency room nurses at St. Joseph’s hospital, including our own President, Sophia’s sister! On November 15, we held a workshop to have our members create cards to give. Every three cards equaled one service hour. Furthermore, on November 23rd, the Key Club cabinet went to the hospital to present the cards to the staff. It was a lot of fun for all our members and officers to say thanks to our amazing healthcare heroes.

Words of Thanks
AG, La Jolla High School, D21
This month especially, my club got really excited about writing letters to healthcare workers. Last and during quarantine in general, we had spent a lot of time writing cards for this organization called Service Salute, which credited service hours through a google form (and image submission) on its website. Unfortunately, that weebly website no longer existed when I looked for it this year. Instead, we turned to Words of Thanks, another online organization that spreads awareness to healthcare workers’ awe-inspiring and arduous efforts to keep people safe. We wrote over twenty cards in the thirty minutes we were (are) allotted for lunch, and sent them off to a hospital as designated at the end of the google form we filled out for service. Thus, although it is through a different website, we are continuing the service of thanking healthcare workers who continue to toil for strangers’ safety. Even though it is a simple task, I feel humbled when I am writing these cards. If a smile can light up someone’s day, then so can a card expressing gratitude. It is difficult to put into words how much these workers’ selflessness means to me. They are risking their lives for ours - mere strangers. It takes a lot of courage and inner strength to get up every day and put one’s own life in danger for another person. I cannot begin to imagine the mental and physical strain such a task would evoke. My dad, as a pulmonary and critical care specialist in the intensive care unit, has dealt and deals with that every day. That’s why it is so important to me that we write these cards - we are reminding the healthcare workers that their work is inspiring and that they matter.
