Kiwanis Book Buddies
ET, Cordova, D44S
Rancho Cordova funds the Junior Giants, which allows kids who cannot afford to pay for gear to play baseball. In addition to this, education and literacy play a major part, so Kiwanis Book Buddies provides books for the children. Volunteers helped this event by wrapping hotdogs and passing out books to the kids, connecting and promoting literacy among them.
Backpack Distribution
KM, South Gate, D13W
On Saturday, July 29, the South Gate Kiwanis sponsored a Back to School Backpack Distribution event at the Azalea Shopping Center from 3 pm to 6 pm. Our very own Key Club members volunteered to not only distribute backpacks but also assist with the assembly! Members from all over the community came to partake in this event. There were games, music, fun activities, and of course a backpack giveaway! Each backpack included the necessary materials each student needs for this upcoming school year such as notebooks, pencils, folders, and more! Our volunteers had an amazing time as well and were very proud to help serve our community and contribute to helping families prepare for this school year.
Sunday Streets
LW, Jefferson, D34N
This summer, we worked in an interclub service event with Westmoor and Galileo Key Club for Sunday Streets. We set up spots in the morning for vendors that would be used for local businesses and nonprofit organizations. In groups, we carried tents and set them up in our designated locations. Followed by carrying sandbags and using zip ties to secure the tents in place. Once that was done, we finished up by setting up the tables and chairs within the tents. The day consisted of a lot of physical labor, but it was fun working together to help promote this community bonding event.
Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation
JA, D37W
On August 26th, many people from our division came early in the morning to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation to help prepare for their annual gala. We helped with setting up tables and chairs, rearranging plants to create beautiful scenery, filling up balloons, and much more! The theme this year was DC superheroes, so we were given capes to wear while volunteering. Since the event ran until late afternoon, we were graciously provided with delicious food and drinks. Everyone was having a fun time chatting with each other. It was such a fun experience, and it has gotten us all excited to see what the next volunteer opportunity will be!
Senior Center Grocery Program
TN, Costa Mesa, D04C
On Friday, July 14th, the CMHS Key Club volunteered at the Costa Mesa Senior Center from 8 to 11 AM. We worked with the senior center last year to host a tech clinic, and this year we helped with their senior grocery program. Here we helped set up the groceries, arrange groups, and direct seniors in lines to collect their groceries. We learned about how to organize a group of seniors: every senior got a randomized color that corresponded to a group; groups went to get groceries one at a time to mitigate chaos. After, we helped clean-up everything. We hope to host another event with them soon!
