July Cleanup

DH, Helix, D31

Closing out our summer and prepping for the new school year, Helix Key Club had one of its monthly cleanups in collaboration with the Kiwanis Club of La Mesa; this time with our Lieutenant Governor, Filsan Saeed, and another member from Grossmont Middle College Key Club. Seven Helix volunteers met at the local Albertsons’ parking lot at 8:30 AM on Saturday, July 1st, with GMC volunteers joining up shortly after. Going down the streets, volunteers worked diligently to remove unwanted debris, finding several interesting things along the way; animal carcasses and droppings galore. It was a good two hours before volunteers finally went home; clearing three trash bags worth of garbage from the streets. While I was personally reluctant to hold a service event over the summer, members really came through and made this one of our more successful cleanups. This was Helix’s first time hosting Key Club members from another school. While it felt a little odd at first, I think it was a great way to open up future collaborations, and I’m excited to see more Key Clubs working together. This wrapped up Helix’s July events and moving on, our officers worked hard to prepare for a new year of service.
