Genki Balls Project

KP, Castle, D22K

On January 28th, Castle Key Club met up with the King Builders, as well as the Kalaheo and Kailua Key Clubs for a collaborative project. The task was to create genki balls in order to aid in improving the water quality in the Ala Wai Canal. Genki balls are made up of soil, rice bran, molasses, water and EM liquid. Some members lined the boxes with newspaper while others mixed ingredients and cleared the shelves to store the genki balls. Once those tasks were complete everyone was separated into small groups to begin forming the genki balls. We had to slowly incorporate the EM liquid into the dry mixture, then make evenly sized balls where we left them in the newspaper-lined boxes to dry. Once this task was completed we cleaned the area and went inside to do some bonding activities such as a game called scrambled eggs! Everyone would group up together in response to questions such as “What is your favorite household pet?” If your favorite was a dog you would meet with the others that felt the same. Overall, the project was a success. We are scheduling a time with EM Hawaii on when we can throw the genki balls into the Ala Wai Canal, which will be another fun activity.
