Boo at The Zoo

In the month of October, I had an extremely memorable experience volunteering at Boo at the Zoo! At this event, I helped out many children that came to the zoo to receive candy and participate in various activities. My friends and I worked at the bat-making craft booth where we taught the kids how to make bats from a toilet paper roll, paper wings, and googly eyes. Many children came by our booth and made unique-looking bats. Some drew small hearts on their wings while others decorated them with skulls and bones. The kids were also dressed up in exceedingly creative costumes; for example, I was impressed by one girl who was a sea anemone from Finding Nemo with little clownfish in between the tentacles. Because I was able to work with these children, I also expanded on my communication skills while volunteering, especially since I had to simplify my verbal instructions when walking them through the bat-crafting process. The event ended at around 8 and we stayed back to help clean up. Although I was tired from volunteering, I had an enjoyable time with my friends and other volunteers as we navigated through the struggles of guiding children while being fueled solely on generic Hot Cheetos and tangy Mexican candies. All in all, Boo at the Zoo was an exciting and memorable service event for me, and I'm very grateful for this engaging volunteer opportunity and the memories that I made throughout the night.
